The fundamental role of corporate Events in Turismophobia

09/01/2025

The concept of turismophobia is defined as ''the rejection of tourists''. This term is expressed by local citizens who, over time, see tourism becoming increasingly saturated, leading to conflictual situations.

OUR CITY

Over the past two decades, Barcelona has been a favorite hotspot for tourists, a place filled with diverse cuisines, great weather, culture, and stunning architecture. In recent years, Barcelona has witnessed a constant struggle from many residents and local communities who have protested in the streets against tourism, even going so far as to harass and expel tourists from establishments. The main reasons are the rise in costs that force residents to pay more, the overburdening of infrastructure such as public transport and local facilities, and inappropriate behavior, such as vandalism by some tourists, creating tension with residents.

Corporate Events and Exhibitions: How Can We Contribute?

At Nexo Events, our fairs and events sector aims to play a fundamental role in raising awareness about this situation and seeking solutions to this problem. To address this, we have focused on four main factors to determine and regulate the issue of turismophobia:

1. Environmental impact: Our primary focus is on the importance of the environment as well as cultural heritage. With mass tourism, there is an increase in pollution and congestion in tourist areas. This can lead to the deterioration and poor preservation of the city and culture. Therefore, we want to help redistribute and divide the excessive mass concentration in tourist areas to less crowded places by organizing events and strategies that enhance the quality of life and tourist experience for both locals and visitors.

2. Education and awareness: Through infographics, conferences, and meetings, we aim to disseminate information on topics related to the role of corporate events in turismophobia, including causes, consequences, unfavorable situations, and solutions that can mitigate irresponsible tourism.

3. Regulation of tourist accommodations: We seek economic sustainability that can favorably reduce the high environmental impact of accommodations within the community, such as Airbnb and illegal accommodations. The idea is to implement clear regulations and compliance standards that promote environmental and social sustainability, such as the use of renewable energy or waste management, thus adhering to social commitment measures that help reduce conflicts between residents and tourists.

4. Carbon footprint: As a MICE agency, we aim to implement responsible practices through workshops, event organization, and incentives, such as guided environmental tours. This sector not only influences the reduction of mass tourism zones but also controls the flow of people in urban and local environments, thereby minimizing carbon footprint pollution. This involves avoiding high-consumption transport methods, such as cruises for team building.

Turismophobia in Barcelona, present for the past 16 years, is a result of residents' dissatisfaction with the impact of mass tourism on their quality of life and the saturation of public spaces. This phenomenon has become increasingly unfavorable for the city's inhabitants. Therefore, it is crucial to address the issue by promoting a deeper understanding of mass tourism, as its long-term effects can be detrimental to everyone.
